12 Ways to Cut Your Malaysian Income Tax Before 31 December 2026

YA2026 reliefs only count money paid by 31 December 2026. These 12 moves are ordered from easiest, each with its limit.

Example: single, RM8,000 a month plus a one-month bonus, basic reliefs only — YA2026 tax is about RM7,623.50. Max out lifestyle (RM2,500), sports (RM1,000) and PRS (RM3,000), plus check-ups and vaccines (RM2,000), and it drops to about RM6,008.50 — RM1,615 saved.

Finally: keeping receipts

You don’t upload receipts when filing, but LHDN can ask for them for 7 years. Photograph every receipt into one folder and ask for an e-Invoice (give your IC number) — LHDN is piloting pre-filled reliefs from e-Invoice data for YA2026.

FAQ

Is it worth spending just to get a relief?

No. RM100 of spending saves at most RM30 (at the 30% band) — usually RM6–25. Only time spending you’d do anyway, or use savings-type reliefs like PRS and SSPN.

Can I claim YA2026 for something paid after 31 December?

No. Reliefs follow the payment date — anything paid from 1 January 2027 goes into YA2027.

How do I claim a phone bought on instalments?

Claim what you actually paid in the year. This year’s instalments count towards this year’s lifestyle relief.
