How it’s calculated

  1. Total income = monthly salary × (12 + bonus months) + other income.
  2. Total reliefs = individual relief + each relief you enter, capped at its limit.
  3. Chargeable income = total income − total reliefs.
  4. Apply the bands above, then subtract the RM400 rebate (if eligible) and zakat.

FAQ

What is chargeable income?

Total income minus all reliefs. Income tax is calculated on chargeable income band by band, not on your gross income.

What is the RM400 rebate?

Residents with chargeable income of RM35,000 or less get RM400 off their tax, plus another RM400 if their spouse has no income. It can only bring tax down to zero — it is not paid out.

How does zakat work?

Zakat or fitrah you paid is deducted from your tax in full, up to the amount of tax payable.

Why is my result different from my PCB?

PCB is an estimate your employer deducts monthly; it ignores reliefs you claim yourself (lifestyle, insurance, medical…). Claim them when you file and LHDN refunds what was over-deducted.

Do I need to pay tax?

Anyone with taxable income should register a tax file and file a return — and you must if PCB is deducted from your salary. Whether you actually pay depends on reliefs: a single person with only the basic reliefs usually pays nothing below about RM3,500 a month.
